The Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock, led by the Chairman, Parliamentary Agriculture and Livestock Committee, Hon. (Dr.) John K. Mutunga, conducted a field visit to the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA) as part of its ongoing Inquiry into the pricing structure and dynamics of Kenya’s tea industry. The visit provided an opportunity for the Committee to engage with EATTA’s leadership and obtain firsthand insights into the operations of the Mombasa Tea Auction and the wider tea value chain. During the session, the Committee focused on understanding the major cost centres within the industry, analysing their influence on pricing, and identifying gaps that may hinder efficiency and competitiveness. Insights gathered from this visit will help inform the Committee’s recommendations on policy, institutional, and market reforms necessary to strengthen the sector and ensure its long-term sustainability..

A visit by EATTA to Uganda to engage its members on challenges facing the Tea Sector in the country. The EATTA engaged the Director General, the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Co-operatives, and the Private Sector Foundation Uganda to address the legislative and regulatory challenges facing the Tea Sector in Uganda. Other key areas of interest discussed during the engagements are the efforts to remove Tea Trade Barriers specifically Transit bonds for Non-Kenyan teas in order to make the teas competitive ,and the issue of double taxation ,which is against the EAC protocol.
